There are many great benefits of attending college. Among them are the wonderful clubs and opportunities to meet others, educate the community and affect the lives of many people. It seems to be Shanese’s calling to help and educate others’ and being a student at Albany State University is just the place to do it. She is involved with Student Government Association, Global Ambassadors, The Sociological Society, and HIV/Aids Peer Educators organization. Through these associations she has connected with volunteer opportunities at the Boys and Girls Club, Girls Inc, Local Elementary Schools in the Greater Albany GA area, Hosea Feed the Hungry, Lily Pad and Liberty House.
Living presently on her own, it was a long journey for Shanese. She was in foster care from birth to emancipation at 21. She lived in 35 foster homes and 1 Residential Treatment Facility. At 19 she found herself homeless, living out of a car, feeling unsupported in the system that raised her. She was living in another state so she was unable to access funding that was due to her. That experience pushed her to want to help others in her situation and to change many existing structures within the foster care system. Hopefully she will get that chance.
Shanese would like to be a Program Evaluator, where she will go into business, government agencies,and organizations to analyze their existing program structure and implement effective ways to improve their programs. She especially wants to work with Foster Care agencies and the Department of Family Services.
