Webinar: Older Youth Pandemic Relief: Using Chafee Funds to Support Driving

On March 10th, 2021 FosterClub and Juvenile Law Center, with Embrace Families provided an overview of their Keys to Independence Program, which currently provides funds to help young people in care obtain a driver’s license, cover the cost of vehicle insurance, pay for driver’s education class and testing fees, practice lessons, practice hours, license fees, roadside assistance, deductible assistance, and assistance in purchasing a car, and other driving-related costs. 

This webinar provided the following:

  • Implementation tools and tips to use Chafee funds to assist young people in your state

The Goal of this webinar is to provide tools and tips to states, jurisdictions, and local advocates on best practices to use the $4,000 in Chafee Funds allocated in the Consolidated Appropriations Act to assist young people in your state with costs related to driving and assists young people in overcoming barriers to driving so young people in care achieve normalcy.

The Supporting Foster Youth and Families through the Pandemic Act (H.R. 7947) became law as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act on December 27, 2020 (PL 116-260). This law is intended to bring significant emergency relief to young people in and from foster care. Young people in and from care were instrumental in the passage of this law and it is critical that young people are involved in the implementation process.
