Two Council Members, Sam Martin & Katarina Kabick, joined Foster Youth in Action's Leaders for Change Conference where they shared about the Family First Prevention Services Act of 2018 and how young people could be involved in the implementation process.

Over 100 foster youth and alumni leaders convened on Monterey, CA to build their knowledge, connections and skills - preparing to bring what they learned back to their states and counties - representing over 21 grassroots foster youth boards and councils.

Sam and Katarina shared the key provisions of the Family First Prevention Services Act, reflected on the youth and alumni input heard throughout the development of the Act and how advocates can continue to be involved.

In the breakout session, they delved deep into the elements of each provision - asking advocates to consider how they can be involved with their state's implementation process. Some of the discussion included:

  • What evidence-based programs will your state select?
  • How will your state help youth achieve connections to caring adults?

Finally, the group discussed ways they are already involved with their states and shared ideas of best practice.

Council members are excited to continue educating, sharing and discussing the new Family First Prevention Services Act and how young people can be involved. Want to learn more? Contact [email protected] or call 503.717.1552.
