Five years in Rhode Island’s Foster care system

Sylvia graduated from North Providence High School. She plans on going to college someday, in addition to interning for FosterClub, she also works for the NEYC as a Youth Consultant.

Sylvia has been in and out of Rhode Island’s foster care system, she first entered the system when she was five years old. She was placed into a foster home for two years, then went back home for a couple of years.

She re-entered the system when she was 17 years old, and was placed into a group home. Sylvia went into a couple different group homes before going into her own apartment, then aging out in 2020.

By doing advocacy work, Sylvia wants to use her voice and experiences to create change in the system so it serves youth better. In her free time she enjoys reading books and spending time by herself, she finds it refreshing. Sylvia’s goal is to become an independent woman who makes herself proud.
