Sofia was born and raised in Russia. After immigrating to California with her mother, she was placed into the system at the age of 14. She was in 4 different foster care placements and attended 3 different high schools. Despite the constant moving and instability, Sofia graduated as class valedictorian from her high school in 2003.
Sofia will be graduating with honors from the University of California, San Diego in June with a BA in Political Science-International Relations and a minor in Russian and Soviet Studies. Sofia is the Vice President and co-founder of the Russian Club at UCSD, a member and California representative on the National Foster Youth Advisory Council, and the student voice on the San Pasqual Academy Advisory Board. Sofia plans to pursue a joint J.D. /M.A. degree in International Law and plans to become a diplomat specializing in in Russian-U.S. relations. Sofia is a young leader, a diplomat-in-training, globetrotter, and a foster kid.
